Clean Hydrogen from Natural Gas
Huntsman now offers a low carbon-footprint hydrogen derived from natural gas. Utilizing just a fraction of the renewable power required for electrolysis, Huntsman produces hydrogen through its innovative methane pyrolysis process. This method significantly reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 95% compared to the steam methane reforming (SMR) process.
The MIRALON® pyrolysis process can even become a carbon sink, achieving a negative carbon footprint if the methane source is replaced with flare gas or renewable natural gas. This technology has been successfully demonstrated at pilot scale, and Huntsman is now designing plants for long-term hydrogen supply to the market. The economics of low carbon footprint hydrogen production are compelling, especially with the valuable solid carbon nanotubes produced as a co-product.
Huntsman is currently in discussions with various parties regarding locations for future hydrogen plants. We can build or license hydrogen production facilities to supply industries such as transportation, chemicals, steel, or cement, or to integrate hydrogen into natural gas networks or hydrogen hubs. The use of clean hydrogen can significantly contribute to decarbonization efforts.
Comparison to SMR & Electrolysis
The MIRALON® pyrolysis process produces hydrogen more economically than electrolysis, requiring only one third of the renewable electricity and almost no water. Compared to SMR, the MIRALON® process reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 95%.
Huntsman believes that the combined benefits of a low carbon footprint, an excellent ratio of renewable power to hydrogen production, and attractive economics make the MIRALON® pyrolysis process an outstanding route to clean, sustainable hydrogen.
