Huntsman to Showcase Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF) Technology at Pentagon Event

The Woodlands, Texas – Huntsman Corporation (NYSE: HUN) announced it will be showcasing its spray polyurethane foam (SPF) technology at the Pentagon Energy Security Event 2010 in the Pentagon Courtyard,
Oct. 12 - 15 in Washington, D.C.
The private event is designed to educate and promote energy improvement technologies to the Pentagon and Department of Defense (DoD) community. Attendees will see demonstrations of how Huntsman’s SPF technology used in tents and buildings helps to eliminate air infiltration and reduces hot and cold air and moisture penetration.
Attendees will also hear how SPF is now being used in forward operating bases (FOBs) in Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan to save fuel and energy. For example, at Camp Victory in Baghdad, SPF provided a 50 percent fuel savings and achieved a full ROI in just 75 days.

Additionally, in applications at FOBs, SPF has helped to play a role in reducing casualties. Slow convoys carrying fuel to power generators for air conditioning units (in tents and buildings) were often targeted. With SPF applied to the structures, less energy is required to cool the buildings, thus reducing the fuel demand and the number of fuel convoys, and consequently helping to reduce the number of casualties.
According to the Department of Energy (DOE), buildings account for approximately 40 percent of the total energy consumed in the United States. The majority of building energy use is spent on space heating and cooling, and a large fraction of that energy is lost through the building envelope due to air leakage. SPF mitigates this problem, by acting as both an effective thermal insulation material, as well as an air barrier. With SPF, buildings will typically use 30 to 50 percent less energy to heat and cool, compared to buildings insulated with traditional fibrous insulation materials. SPF can be applied in new buildings or as a retrofit to existing buildings.
Domestically, SPF plays an important role in reducing building energy use. SPF helps military installations meet the latest building requirements (ECB 2009-29 Building Air Tightness Requirements) mandated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for new and renovation construction projects, and helps meet the number one strategic energy security goal set within the Army Energy Security Implementation Strategy (AESIS).
The Pentagon Energy Security Event 2010 will demonstrate the diversity of energy improvement technologies, from solar shades for fighting positions to hybrid vehicles, microgrids and water purification systems — and the event will address the range of issues from the battlefield to military installations and the energy grid. In 2010 alone, the military is investing $2.7B to improve energy efficiencies.
